“I’m a traveler and had been visiting Cambodia for about ten years and got to know quite a few people down there. My journey to Cambodia in 2006 left an indelible impression on me. I was deeply moved by the images of the extreme poverty and desperate circumstances in which many Cambodians live. Kindredhouse was born from an idea in 2007 on a return trip to Cambodia with my daughter, Riley Bassett. The idea was to establish a group of friends, family, and volunteers to try to make a difference in the lives of rural Cambodians. This organization is an extension of our shared love of culture and strong belief in service,” says Erin West, of Draper, Utah.

After having become the leader in tooth whitening with Opalescence® PF and the custom tray system, what was the “why” behind creating Opalescence Go®? Opalescence Go and Ultradent’s UltraFit Tray. Well, we were continually looking at the whitening marketplace and listening to the needs and feedback from our customers. The Fourth of July has always been a major holiday for me and for my family. We have some fond memories and stories surrounding it. We usually get together and barbeque, and over the years we’ve even done little parades with all the grandkids. They dress up in patriotic costumes and we use the tractor to drive them around our center island while the adults clap and wave. It makes the kids feel particularly special.

If you could relive one happy memory, what would it be? Boy, there are so many happy memories. Certainly, with my 14 kids and 33 grandkids, as well as my lovely bride, Leenie—there are so many great memories that picking one above the others would just be impossible. I’m not too complicated and pretty much what you see is what I am. But some people out there might not know that I love to garden, I love carpentry, and I love tractors and my backhoe. I love being outdoors feeling the earth beneath my hands and feet and the sunshine on my face.

I just returned from Taipei, Taiwan, where we had a great meeting with our Asia-Pacific team. The meeting included the Asia-Pacific team manager, Jim Wilson, along with many of our distributors and numerous key opinion leader dentists from the area. It’s a once-a-year, three-day event that we all look forward to, as it’s a chance to get to know each other better, hear some wonderful lectures on the latest and greatest in Ultradent products and procedures, and see another beautiful, interesting, and fascinating part of the world. They worked hard with their teams and got more than 40 doctors to attend, some of whom spoke at the event.

The photo was taken at Dollar Lake, which is in the high Uinta mountain range here in Utah. It’s on the trail to Kings Peak. I was up there with a youth group as their leader. One morning, another one of the leaders and I woke up super early to get some pretty shots of the lake. Just as we were about to leave, the lake got crystal clear, the sun was coming up, and you could see the mountains perfectly reflected in the water. I had to go through a bunch of bushes to get the shot (there was no trail) and I got completely soaked, but it was worth it!

A couple of weeks ago I was lucky to take my bride, Leenie, on a business trip to Italy for the launch of Mosaic® universal composite, a product we’ve been testing and working on for years—making the trip to one of the most beautiful places in the world that much more exciting. However, we made sure that a trip to Italy wasn’t strictly business. This trip was one of the few that Leenie went on with me. We set it up so we would arrive on Saturday and be able to take a couple days to relax and decompress. On Sunday, Aurelio Gisco, the director of Ultradent’s Italy office, and the fabulous Barbara Madalena took us to the Piedmont area vineyards, just north of Milan, where they grow and make the world-famous Barolo wines. What a stunningly beautiful part of the world. That night, we ate in one of the farm restaurants of the vineyard owner himself, where we were served wonderful, high-quality, down-to-earth, delicious Italian cooking.
