This year has been unpredictable, turbulent, and at the same time, incredibly rewarding. The broader economy has been uneven. Inflation, cost pressures, and supply chain challenges have tested us all. Yet, amid all this, one thing remains clear: This industry is resilient. I still remember it well. It was game five of the NBA Finals between the Utah Jazz and the Chicago Bulls. With reports of Bulls star Michael Jordan having the flu and clocking a 103 degree fever in the locker room before the game, this lifelong Jazz fan thought we had it in the bag. I still remember my first real watch. By today’s standards, it wasn’t super luxurious, but I knew my parents sacrificed to give it to me for my high school graduation, and it meant a lot. A couple of years later, it was stolen while I was travelling, and honestly, it felt like a piece of me went with it. Not only did I admire its craftsmanship and sentimental value, but I also treasured what it symbolized: the value of time. I was a little starstruck, finding myself seated right next to Peter Schutz, former president and CEO of Porsche. Ultradent founder, Dr. Dan Fischer had recently attended a CEO peer group where Peter spoke about his now-famous “hire character, train skill” philosophy. If you know Dan, it shouldn’t be hard to imagine him greeting Peter with a vigorous handshake and immediately inviting him to visit our headquarters in Utah. Also, if you know Dan's charm, it shouldn’t be hard to imagine that Peter agreed. A few of Ultradent’s leaders were arranged around a table in the Wasatch conference room, excited and eager to learn from this renowned business leader who had transformed an iconic brand. It felt like we were hitting the big time. It felt like a sucker punch, reading the findings of the independent report several years ago. Laser teeth whitening was all the rage and Ultradent had found a way to participate—launching a new product that was far less expensive and just as effective as the popular products used on reality makeover shows at the time. Soon after, one of the world’s most respected dental research organizations published their disappointing conclusion: "Use of lights according to the manufacturer's directions did not improve lightening for any system tested." This conflicted with the results we had achieved in our own research and development process. We adjusted our protocols and tested again. The independent researchers were right. Our new teeth whitening product—and all the “laser whitening” products on the market—produced the same results regardless of whether a light was used. The light was nothing but a marketing gimmick. We had a choice. Irradiance vs power, beam size, even the tools used to measure light outputs all play major roles in how a curing light will function. To find true quality and efficiency in a light, a user must be able to wade through the waves of false and misleading claims often made in the world of dental curing light advertising—Ultradent’s Sr. VP of Research & Development, Neil Jessop, delves into these topics and more in this edition of Dentistry Decoded: Insights from R&D. While there is no doubt irradiance adds value, it does not tell the full story of how well a light will cure various materials. Irradiance tests typically only show the irradiance of a very small portion of the light. Measuring the power distributed over the entire beam tells a more comprehensive story of its curing capabilities.
