 According to a recent Dental Economics article1, the overall cost of impressions is greatly influenced by the time spent taking the impressions themselves. The article’s author, Dr. Ronald D. Perry, says “a close examination reveals the financial impacts of impression-taking involve far more than material costs, and many dentists who seek to cut corners in this area may be costing themselves more in the end.” Thus, it is the quality of the material and time spent on the procedure that determine how much impressions may be costing the average clinician.

 “With all the people in the world that are in need, it’s easy to feel like you’re not making a difference,” says Dr. Tim Brown, a family practice dentist out of Neenah, Wisconsin. Dr. Brown co-founded a humanitarian dental clinic in Hinche, Haiti, five years ago. He continually reminds himself and the volunteers who travel with him of a famous Mother Teresa quote in order to keep the volunteers’ spirits up.

 As a very busy music and choir teacher, Lara Wolford of Piqua, Ohio, says she’s always aware of how her teeth look because she’s always singing or teaching others to sing.  Why use the Ultrawave piezo ultrasonic device? Any ultrasonic power scaler will be faster and more efficient than hand scaling, but the Ultrawave piezo has the added advantage of being easier on the clinician from an ergonomic standpoint, and easier on the patient from a comfort standpoint. The linear action of the tip paired with the reflex technology allows the tip to talk, or communicate, with where the energy is being generated in the unit itself. For the Ultrawave device, this is called Reflex™ technology. Thanks to this feature, the tip adjusts to the work load according to the treatment situation so that the clinician doesn’t need to use, for example, added lateral pressure which is ergonomically hard on the hands and the patient. This technology also prevents heat buildup in the handpiece, so less water is needed, giving the clinician better visibility and giving the patient a more relaxing, less stressful experience!

 Carol Jent and I rounded out 2014 with two fabulous and fun lectures that won’t soon be forgotten. The first lecture was in Oklahoma City where, once again, Carol Jent presented to the dental hygienists and attending staff that accompanied the clinicians in attendance. Denise Jennings and Nick Williams, two of our outstanding territory account managers (TAMS), addressed the sales needs. I was blown away by Nick’s expertise and passion for turning clinicians on to Expertemp™.  As curing light technology improves, dentists are consistently sold on irradiance (mw per cm2) as being the defining factor in beam effectiveness. While there is no doubt irradiance adds value, it does not tell the full story of how well a light will cure various materials. Irradiance tests typically only show the irradiance of a very small portion of the light. Measuring the power distributed over the entire beam tells a more comprehensive story of its curing capabilities.
